Depending on which survey you choose, there are between 850,000 and 2,500,000
defensive gun uses per year by law abiding citizens. A Department of Justice sponsored
survey in 1994 estimated 1,500,000 uses and Dr. Gary Kleck, a Florida State University
criminologist, estimated in 1993 approximately 2,000,000. These are violent crimes
prevented by an average law abiding citizen with a gun.

The anti-gun crowd claim that “firearms accidents are a leading cause of death among
children” and that “a child dies every (15, 30, 90 seconds, you pick, they used different
numbers at different times) from a gun shot” does not hold true. In 1999 ( the latest stats
I have available from the National Center for Health Statistics ) there were 31 accidental
deaths due to firearms involving children under the age of 10 and 57 more between the
ages of 10 and 14. Hardly “a leading cause”.

Firearm ownership increased by about 2.5 million per year from 1993 to 1996 and the
murder rate in the U. S. fell 20 percent over the same period and another 9 percent drop
in 1997.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife reports that according to the National Safety Council
hunting is a safer sport than football, baseball, cycling, volleyball, swimming, golf, tennis,
fishing, billiards, and ping pong.
